The Knights of St. John International (KSJI) is a Catholic fraternal and charitable organization founded on the principles of faith, unity, and service to humanity. Its origins trace back to the late nineteenth century in the United States of America, at a time when Catholic men sought a structured society that would promote spiritual growth, mutual support, and active participation in the mission of the Church.

The Order was officially incorporated on May 6, 1886, in New York under the patronage of St. John the Baptist, a symbol of courage, righteousness, and unwavering commitment to truth. Inspired by these virtues, the founding members established the organization to defend the Catholic faith, support the Church, and provide charitable assistance to those in need. From the beginning, KSJI emphasized discipline, brotherhood, and Christian leadership, forming men who would live exemplary lives both within the Church and in society.

As the organization grew, its influence spread beyond the United States to other parts of the world. The Order was introduced into West Africa in the early twentieth century by Catholic missionaries and lay faithful who recognized its value in strengthening Catholic communities.

Following its establishment in the United States, the Order grew steadily across parishes nationwide. Commanderies (local units) were founded in cities such as Rochester, Buffalo, Detroit, and Cincinnati, where Catholic men gathered in fellowship to support church ministries and charitable works.

As the 20th century progressed, the organization expanded beyond American borders:

1913 – First commanderies outside the U.S. were established, beginning in Trinidad and Tobago.

Through the 1920s and 1930s, additional commanderies were formed in Panama and several countries in West Africa, including Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

In 1992, reflecting this international presence, the Order officially became the Knights of St. John International, with members and commanderies in multiple continents.

Today, the Knights of St. John International stands as a truly global fraternity with members in North America, Africa, and other regions of the world. Despite cultural differences, all commanderies remain united by the same mission: to defend the faith, serve humanity, and build a stronger Church. The worldwide expansion of KSJI is a testament to the enduring power of faith, brotherhood, and selfless service.

Since its introduction into the country, the Order has grown to become one of the most respected and influential Catholic fraternal organizations, known for its discipline, charity, and commitment to Christian values.

KSJI, originally founded in the United States in 1886, was introduced into Nigeria through the efforts of Catholic missionaries and lay faithful in the early twentieth century. As missionary activities expanded across West Africa, the Church sought structured organizations that would help strengthen the faith of Catholic men and promote leadership within parish communities. The Knights of St. John International provided exactly that platform — combining spirituality, fraternity, and organized service.

The Order reached Nigeria in 1975, and in 1976 it received formal approval from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), allowing it to operate nationwide as an approved Catholic lay association.

Over the decades, KSJI has become a well–recognized Catholic brotherhood in Nigeria, marking milestones such as 50 years of faith and service, with thousands of members active in charitable outreach, evangelisation, and community development.

The Order first took root in southern Nigeria, particularly in areas with strong Catholic missionary presence. Early members were devoted Catholic men who embraced the ideals of the Knights: loyalty to the Church, defense of the faith, and assistance to the needy. Through their commitment and example, the organization quickly gained respect within parishes and dioceses.

From these humble beginnings, KSJI steadily expanded across the country. New commanderies were established in towns and cities as more Catholic men joined the Order. The structured hierarchy, ceremonial traditions, and emphasis on discipline and moral conduct attracted many faithful who desired to serve both God and humanity. Over time, the Ladies Auxiliary was also introduced, allowing Catholic women to actively participate in the mission of the Order and support charitable works alongside the Knights.

As membership increased, KSJI Nigeria began to play a significant role in Church and community development. Members actively supported parish activities, assisted priests and bishops, organized evangelization programs, and provided security and order during Church ceremonies. Beyond the Church, the Knights became widely recognized for their charitable outreach, including hospital visits, assistance to widows and orphans, scholarships for indigent students, disaster relief efforts, and support for the poor and vulnerable.

The growth of the Order led to the establishment of Grand Commanderies and numerous Subordinate Commanderies across dioceses nationwide. Today, KSJI is present in nearly every region of Nigeria, making it one of the largest concentrations of Knights of St. John International anywhere in the world. The organization continues to produce leaders who serve both the Church and society with integrity and dedication.

Throughout its history in Nigeria, KSJI has remained faithful to its core principles of Faith, Fraternity, and Charity. Members are encouraged to give their Time, Talent, and Treasure in service to God and humanity. 🇳🇬 KSJI in Abuja

In Abuja, the Order’s presence began with the formation of local commanderies attached to parishes where dedicated Catholic men sought to live out the principles of Faith, Fraternity, Charity, and Civic Responsibility. The Abuja Grand Commandery has since grown significantly, both in membership and influence. Over the decades, individual commanderies were established across the Federal Capital Territory, reflecting the growth of Catholic communities and a shared commitment to service. An early set of commanderies included units at parishes such as Christ the King Kubwa (#595), Holy Rosary Wuse (#653), St. Mary Karu (#678), and St. John the Baptist Mpape (#738).

Organizational Structure

KSJI in Abuja is organized under the Abuja Grand Commandery, which serves as the highest echelon of the Order in the territory. The Grand Commandery is led by a Grand President, supported by elected officers including the Grand Vice President, Grand Secretary, Treasurer, and other members of the executive council. These leaders are responsible for governance, formation, charitable programming, and spiritual coordination with the Catholic hierarchy.

The leadership of the Commandery has included distinguished Catholic lay leaders committed to disciplined administration and service. In January 2026, Brigadier General Francis Ulonna Njoku was inaugurated as the 6th Grand President of the Abuja Grand Commandery, ushering in a renewed focus on spiritual life, disciplined leadership, and community engagement. His tenure reflects the Order’s longstanding ethos of servant leadership anchored in faith and charity.
